Indianapolis Power and Light (IPL)
Please note that the Commission has scheduled the public field hearing for the IPL rate case (IURC Cause Number 44576). It will be on Monday, March 16th at 6PM at the Crispus Attucks High School Auditorium, 1140 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street, Indianapolis, Indiana. Please spread the word as this case could have far-reaching implications for all. A public field hearing provides IPL customers and interested parties the opportunity to express their opinions directly to the Commission.
IPL is proposing a 55% increase to the fixed customer charge and a 40-65% increase to the variable charges for residential customers. They are also proposing to maintain their archaic declining block rate structure, which means you pay more per kWh if you use less energy....
Although IPL is reporting a much lower rate increase of about $8/month for the average residential customer (http://www.ibj.com/articles/51126-ipl-wants-rate-hike-that-would-boost-average-bill-by-8-per-month), we think it would be closer to $30:
EXISTING IPL RESIDENTIAL TARIFF (Based on 1000 kWh/month)
Customer charge $11.00 (fixed charge)
Energy charge: (variable charge)
First 500 kWh $33.50 (500 * .067)
2nd 500 kWh $22.00 (500 * .044)
>$66.50 a month before trackers
PROPOSED IPL RESIDENTIAL TARIFF
Customer charge $ 17.00 (monthly fixed charge)
Energy charge: (variable charge)
First 500 kWh $46.97 (500 * .093935)
2nd 500 kWh $36.50 (500 * .073)
>$100.47 a month before trackers
That’s a $33.97 monthly increase BEFORE ANY TRACKERS. The fixed charge would increase by 55%. Variable or energy charges charges would increase by 40-65%.
